  1. What am I doing wrong?

I held a job for 3 years in Victoria. In February I moved to Western Australia. It is now mid July and I have not been able to get a job? I’m a graphic designer - I can pretty much do ANYTHING in my field. I’m switched on with computers, more so than a lot of people I have met that are even in the same industry! What is going on?

I have even applied for checkout chick jobs, because I am desperate to get an income! I am in danger of getting my car taken from me, I can barely pay my bills, I am now having to borrow money from my Mother.

I have subscribed to your newsletter and have downloaded your e-book. But I am in such a rut, and feeling lower than ever before, I am so close to giving up and losing everything.

  2. PS: Sorry to be such a downer, but I am so sick of being rejected by these stupid jobs!

I understand how you are feeling down, but you have to persist. If you convince yourself you are “down”, it will show in your job application and interview. Although it might be hard being positive, try to keep a happy front going and convince yourself you will have your dream job soon.

I’m not sure how the graphic design marketplace is in WA, but it is possible that when you apply for lower qualified positions, people won’t hire you because they think you will walk as soon as you find something within your area of expertise.

Have you asked for feedback from the firms with whom you lodged applications? Most will give you feedback that could help, especially if there are negative reasons for not selecting you … you need to know what they are.

Is it possible for you to door knock graphic design firms with a portfolio of you work and ask if they have any vacancies or know of anyone who may have? Can you work from home?

While job seeking can be debilitating and depressing, it’s important to realise that when you don’t get a job for which you have applied, it is not necessarily that you are unsuitable or no good. There are many reasons, some of which have nothing to do with your expereince/qualifications suitability eg, like preferring so-called “locals” or wanting older people who might not be so active socially.

Keep at it Caz and something will crop up soon.

    Best wishes

    Robin

  4. I am persisting, as much as it makes me want to rip my hair out, I am. My partner has been very supportive and helpful, but that’s where most of my pressure is coming from. I hate being so dependant on someone else!

The usual response I get is “you were high on our list, but we found someone with more experience”, or something similar to that effect. That’s nice and dandy to say, but doesn’t help my situation. If I had a list of people who were “a little better”, I would kick them in the shins beforehand :P

Thanks for your help :) If I have any more questions, I know where to come. Super speedy response who knows what they are talking about. Nice.
