Mystery Shopping While You’re Job Seeking

Mystery shopping could be your solution to boredom, lack of resources and self-esteem while you are waiting to find the job of your dreams.
Most mystery shopping jobs require you to go to retail businesses, buy products or services or make enquiries about them and then report on your experience. Although you need some funds to buy products eg, toothpastes, cleaning products etc, you get paid for the stuff you buy and can then use it … it’s effectively free but compensates for a little of your time (which you have plenty of … right?)

Hint: If you charge expenditures to a credit card that has rewards points, you can accrue points and have the Mystery Shopping Firm repay you direct into your credit card at the end of each month. That way you get a little bit more.
One advantage is that when you go for a job, you can explain that you haven’t sat idly about, that you have used your initiative and are learning something about the retail sector too. Good kudos for you.

Mystery Shopping is a great way to make ends meet, get a few free groceries or a free meal out with your spouse or a friend and I really like the idea of showing potential employers that someone hasn’t just been sitting around waiting for a job to come to them.
I work for a Mystery Shopping Company and we are always looking for new shoppers in areas where we may have a new client or location, or we have to keep shoppers on a rotation. It would be great if more out of work individuals, or just people with a couple of free hours to sign up and try mystery shopping as a way to save or earn a little extra cash. I also really like the idea of using the credit card reward points to the shopper’s advantage; I may pass this idea along to some of my shoppers as well. Thank you for posting this!

Thanks for your comments Laura.
Mystery shopping involves some key skills employers look for eg, initiative, communication, planning, attention to detail etc and is a far better option than just sitting about waiting to send the next job application.
I’ll continue to spread the MS word throughout the various fora with which I’m involved.
