The Five Steps in Addressing Selection Criteria

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

When you apply for jobs that require you to address selection criteria, you should keep the following four steps in mind:

  1. Analyse the selection criteria
  2. Identify the key elements of the selection criteria and separate them. This is essential so you don’t miss anything
  3. Note the qualifying keywords in each element
  4. Jot down points you will cover for each element and each keyword
  5. From the points you have written, now write an answer to each element addressing each keyword

If you follow these points carefully, you’ll finish up with a written response to selection criteria that will go a good way towards winning the job because many of your competitors don’t know what they are doing.

Job Opportunities in Dubai - Help Build World’s Tallest Building

I just had to show you this outstanding, high level job opportunity. Not for the squeamish or those afraid of heights, construction and crane operator positions to help build the world’s tallest building.

Don’t let the fact that it’s built on sand bother you at all. Just check the weather report for the day, grab your lunch and off to work. Oh, you have to be super fit too to climb up to the crane or top floor.

Dubai's and the World's Tallest Building

At least if it fell over or you slipped off the platform, you wouldn’t have to worry about being in a wheelchair for life ….

I don’t mind heights, but this is ridiculous.

Employment Job Listings - Government Departments

Finding a government job listing isn’t all that hard if you know where to look. Each of the governments in Australia has a job site and also issues a Gazette with advertised positions.

You’ll find each here:

Australian Government
Northern Territory Government
West Australian Government
Queensland Government
Victorian Government
New South Wales Government
Tasmanian Government
Australian Capital Territory
Government of South Australia

Some are more sophisticated than others, but collectively there is a wealth of information and positions vacant for anyone wanting to know more about government employment in Australia, or to apply for a job.

Employment Opportunities Excellent for Immigrants to Australia

The opportunities for immigration to, and employment in Australia for skilled migrants have never been better.

An article in today’s The Australian newspaper by eminent editor, Paul Kelly, includes the following statistics about immigration:

The Rudd Government has presided over the biggest annual increase in the intake since the scheme’s inception in 1945. The total intake this year is 190,000, more than double John Howard’s first year. The scope of the program’s transformation is immense. This year the skilled component is 70 per cent of the intake.

In addition, the class 457 visas for temporary skilled workers are running at 100,000 this year, compared with less than 40,000 five years ago.

Traditionally, high immigration has unsettled Australian voters. It’s likely therefore that in due course, pressure will be applied on the government by lobby groups to reduce the intake levels. How long this will take is anybody’s guess. Alternatively, it may be that Australians are becoming accustomed to having other, different nationalities living among us, realise that they aren’t the bogeymen and women we thought they were and aren’t as ethnophobic as we have been.

Clearly, if you are seeking employment opportunities and permanent residence in Australia, now is the time to make your move … if you have something to offer.

Job Alerts are Very Useful

Most employment agencies and many other organisations with job vacancy sites have a job alerts feature where you enter details of your email address, the job types in which you are interested and then they send you alert messages.

Instead of having to search for jobs, the job information comes to you.

Here’s a couple of examples:

http://jobs.tas.gov.au/email/index.php?Jobs_Session=0312b9f4e2866c03019ca47761a52443

This is a really useful feature you need to use as part of your job searching strategy. If you aren’t using it, do some surfing today to find out where you can access job alerts.

Career Management begins with …

Career Management begins with knowing all about the job which is going to be the focus of your career. If you don’t know enough about the career of your choice, then you may end up disappointed.

When my daughter rang me to say that she wanted to set up a retail business selling clothing and accessories, all she could see was the supposed glitz and glamour. It does sound glamorous too, owning your own business and emulating the success of others.

However, she was thinking with her heart and not her head. She’d given little thought to the fact that she is a single parent with a six year old son and the challenges involved in being the only person in a shop open from 9 am to 5 pm. She hadn’t thought about the relentless weekly rent and the fact that the contract was mandatory for three years … quit early and you still have to pay until the end of contract.

When I give her a reality check, she thinks I’m being negative, not realistic. I decided to buy her this FABJOB career guide:

Before I emailed it to her, I read it from front to back to see if it was okay. It was excellent and I must admit I also learnt a few things from it. After my daughter read it, she realised that it wasn’t the right time for her to begin her business. Maybe later on when her son is older and it’s more practicable.

The point is, do you know all about the career you are trying to establish? If not, you could try be reading one of the FABJOB guides as they are written by experts in their fields and tell it like it is, the good, the bad and the ugly.
