Selection Criteria - Write to Win

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Selection Criteria can be a mystery if you haven’t come across them before in your job search. When you apply for a job writing responses to selection criteria, you need to read each criterion carefully and make sure you identify each element in it. Many applications I have read that purport to address selection criteria have responded to one or two elements, but missed one or two others. This is a sure way to kill your job application.

When you read each criterion highlight the key elements of it and then, underneath, address them systematically. Preferably use the same keywords in your written response. For example, if the criterion is, “Demonstrated ability to use MS Word to produce letters”, respond with something like, “… while at Acme Finance I used MS Word to produce letters, reports, brochures and other documents.”

That way, either the human reader or a scanner will detect the similarity more readily and you’ll get a good tick against your name.
